Example of Engraved Score
I have always loved the graphic artistic value of the printed musical manuscript. I remember being very moved in my youth – and throughout my life – by seeing original and facsimile framed pages of hand-written scores by Beethoven, Bach, Gershwin, and others hanging or displayed in glass in the offices and homes of music aficionados, museums, and libraries from Los Angeles to Jerusalem, and Moscow to Cape Town. My signed scores I received personally from Aaron Copeland and George Crumb, I treasure as much for the art of the written work as much as the music their scores preserve. – Bruce Louis Cohen
Bruce Louis Cohen’s lyrics, musical compositions and arrangements have been reviewed as “an essential part of the make up of the genre we now call, ‘Messianic.’ They are standards that come to mind whenever you think about Messianic Jewish worship music.” (MTimes Review, Fall 2007) Being seen as among the ubiquitous creative pioneers of an entire musical genre is a serendipitous mixture of timing, geography, and good luck for which he, as a musician, is very grateful.
At an international conference in the late 1980’s, a Canadian rabbi introducing Cohen to teach a seminar on worship songwriting said, “I think we all agree that Bruce Cohen’s music captures the spirit of the modern Messianic Jewish revival.”
We offer here in limited amounts and varying formats the manuscripts of Cohen’s songs and arrangements – either for framing, for libraries, or as file-away collectibles. It is his hope the “captured spirit” of the modern Messianic Jewish movement in Cohen’s musical scores might be inspirational art for the lobby, office, or home of those who cherish the value of such inspiration – and transmit legacy value for Messianic Judaism as a movement with endemic art forms.
